What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is a condition characterised by the accumulation of protein-rich fluid (swelling) in one or multiple areas of the body due to a compromised lymph system.
Can Lymphoedema be cured?
There is no cure for lymphoedema; however, it can be managed by an evidence-based management called complete decongestive therapy.
What causes Lymphoedema?
There are two types of Lymphoedema:
- Primary Lymphoedema: due to genetic causes that affect the lymphatic system.
- Secondary Lymphoedema: Individuals can develop lymphoedema due to various reasons such as: Cancer, cancer treatments, infection, obesity, surgery, trauma, or other medical conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency.
What is the difference between swelling, Lymphoedema and Lipedema?
Swelling is a build-up of fluid in one area caused by direct trauma, inflammation, heart failure or even surgery with nil issues with the lymphatic system.
On the other hand, lymphoedema/lipedema is an accumulation of lymph fluid/ protein-rich fluid secondary to a compromised lymphatic system in the area.
What treatment can be done for Lymphoedema?
The evidence-based management for Lymphoedema is called complete decongestive therapy (CDT) which includes: Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), Compression therapy, Exercise Therapy and skin care. This is a comprehensive approach to managing the oedema and preventing complications.
What is manual lymphatic drainage?
MLD is a gentle form of massage that aims to assist with the flow of the lymphatic fluid away from the targeted tissue using slow and repetitive movements to mimic the normal function of the lymphatic vessels.
Who is qualified to do Lymphoedema Management?
Lymphoedema management requires a trained and qualified therapist who has specialised training in lymphoedema management.
